Walter Evans Wins Kusko Ice Classic with 1:08 pm pick
(Bethel) Residents of this Western Alaska seaport community celebrated the annual departure of river ice with music, hot dogs and soap bubbles as Bethel Search and Rescue President Peter Atchak announced the lucky winner of the 2003 Kuskowkwim Ice Classic. Walter Evans of Bethel, reportedly on holiday in southern climes picked 1:08 pm on April 30 as the time the tripod just off the seawall would move 100 feet and trip the time clock.
